Steve Bingham - A Short Biography
Steve Bingham’s interest in photography began at the tender age of
eleven when he discovered the magic of developing film under the
glow of a dim red bulb in his mother’s kitchen. He won his first
photography contest while still in high school and eventually went
on to get a Masters Degree in Photography from the Brooks Institute
of Photography. For the next 40 years he taught photography at the
secondary and college level and managed his commercial photography
business, West Coast Images.
Although Mr. Bingham’s work has been published in dozens of national
magazines (such as Popular Photography, Petersen’s Photographic,
Trailer Life, First, Golfer’s Digest, Trains, etc) his real interest
lies in the fine art aspect of manipulating digital images. His
first digital work was published 1994 in Popular Photography in an
article titled “Digital Photography Comes of Age” (the very first
digital images ever published by this magazine). Since then he has
continued to push the envelope into new and exciting areas.
In 2007 he taught his last photography class at Gila Community
College and began in earnest to explore the possibilities of
computer enhanced photographic images. Although he first began
experimenting with computer imagery in 1991, the equipment was
incredibly slow and very difficult to use. Before purchasing
Photoshop 2.5 for the PC computer, he first used U-Lead’s Photo
Styler - the leader in PC photo imaging at the time. (The computer
was so slow that sometimes it would take all night for a single
image to render.) Since that time he has been obsessed with the
wonderful discoveries that have been opened to him through the
computer. It seems as though the possibilities are endless and
limited only by his imagination.
